Uncounted millennia ago, the Elves came through from the Feywild and settled in the hilly land they named Zarahemla.
Whether it’s an effect of the journey from the Feywild, or some existing quirk of Fey blood, the elves of Zarahemla have an extreme gender imbalance: one man is born to every two or three women. Consequently their society is matrilineal, and while romantic relationships are fluid, children are born by carefully arranged contract. Women have each of their children by a different father. All elves live in their mother’s household; most clans have lived on the same estates for centuries.
The elves are largely rural-dwelling, but their borders are ever expanding and their military culture is highly developed. A mother’s fondest hope is that her daughter may grow up to be a great fighter; elven magic and science exist only insofar as they may develop greater engines of war, and elven tacticians are the finest in the known world. This martial prowess made Zarahemla of great use to the human nation during the Tiefling wars.
